Our old printers and photocopiers have been replaced by new machines that offer black & white and colour printing, photocopying and scanning.

Make yourself familiar with them when preparing for your resits and/or when doing your research:

Scanning is free on each machine and allows you to send the scanned document to your Kingston e-mail or to save it on a USB stick.

Approach us with your questions if the above instructions haven’t covered all of your concerns about the new process. We are happy to assist you!

To view or credit your printing and photocopying account go to My Kingston (http://go.kingston.ac.uk ) and select ePay Print from the Tools tab:

This will open a window  that will allow you to login to ePay Print with your username and password:

Click on the “Log in” button and you will be taken to the summary of your print and  photocopying account. You’ll see your name and current account balance as well as the total amount of print jobs and print pages you have submitted. To the left hand side, the page lists different features to help you manage your account.

For a printing and photocopying top up, click on “Add Credit”:

On the next screen, select the amount of money you want to add to your account and then confirm it by clicking the “Add value” button. Credit will be added via secure online payment and the process is similar to most online purchases.

You will then be asked for your Credit / Debit card details and your billing address. Fill in all the fields that end in asterisks – those are required fields.

Once you click “Continue”, your payment will be processed and you will see your current balance if you click on the “Summary” link to the left hand side.

Don’t forget to logout at the end of your transaction.

Information Services will be beginning a new wide format printing trial from 3rd December.

Where and when  is the trial?

There will be new large format printers installed at Knights Park and Penrhyn Road LRCs from the 3rd December 2012. The trial will run for two weeks. At KP LRC the printer will be located next to the Helpdesk. At PR LRC it will be on the ground floor of the LRC.

What type of printing is available?

You will be able to print your own posters in A1 or A0 size from any computer in the LRCs. There will only be poster paper available (plain white 120gsm). We will not be able to offer any other specialist printing at this stage.

 How do I print?

You must format, send, and release print jobs to the printers. Help sheets will be available from the LRC Helpdesks and posters with instructions will be at each printer. You are responsible for ensuring jobs are set up correctly in PDF, scaled and set to the correct size and layout. Refunds will only be available for printer errors.

We are aware that a recent update has caused some Windows computers in our LRCs and labs to lose their printers, or for them to be very slow to appear.

We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible.

In the meantime please use these alternative printing routes:

A. All documents:
1. Go to www.kingston.ac.uk/support
2. Print Copy and Scan
3. Web Upload Page
4. Log In
5. Web Print
6. Submit a Job
7. Select Web Print Mono or Web Print Colour
8. Print Options and Account Selection
9. Upload Document
10. Upload and Complete
11. You will get to a Web Print page where it will tell you it is being held in a queue.

The job can then be released as normal although there may be some delay in the job appearing in the queue.

B. Black and white documents:
Send an email to print@kingston.ac.uk and include the document as an attachment.
If you send a document with any colour in it, it will be printed as colour and you will be charged colour printing prices.

Printing your cover sheets on coloured paper

We answer a lot of questions about printing on the coloured cardboard sheets from the SEC student office currently. The printers default to A4 plain paper from the printer trays. If you want to print on your own paper, you need to select the bypass tray in the print dialogue box before you submit your print job.

Many of you will probably only want to print the cover sheet of your dissertation on your own paper, so please bear in mind to only select the current page instead of the whole document.

Here are the settings you need to change in

a) Windows…

  • Select File and Print
  • Select the printer (colour or mono)
  • Select ‘Properties’
  • Under ‘Paper Source’ select ‘Bypass Tray’ from the drop down

Place your paper in the Bypass Tray and release the job.

b) Macs…

Select File and Print

  • Select the third drop down menu ‘Copies and Pages’
  • Select ‘Paper Feed’ from the list
  • In the ‘Paper Feed’ drop down box select ‘Bypass tray’ or any tray that is listed as ‘Manual’.

Place your paper in the Bypass Tray and release the job.

Print-outs not Time-outs: 3 quick ways to print from your own device

Need to print your work but don’t have the time to login to a university PC? No problem – here’s 3 great time-saving methods that’ll enable you to send documents to the MFDs wirelessly, from your own mobile device or laptop.

Method 1: Login to the My Desktop Anywhere service.

Far and away the best option. Simply install and configure the My Desktop Anywhere software by following these instructions. You’ll then be able to print files in exactly the same manner as if you were using a desktop PC on campus.

My Desktop Anywhere is the best method to use for wireless printing since it gives you the greatest level of functionality: you can tweak page layouts and finishing options, and print in a wide range of file formats (put simply: if you can print it from a university desktop PC, then you can print it via My Desktop Anywhere).

Top Tip: Using one of our Laptop Loans? The My Desktop Anywhere is pre-installed on all these devices. Double-click on the icon that looks like this:

my desktop anywhere

Method 2: Upload your document via the Web Upload Page

If you haven’t installed the My Desktop Anywhere software, you can still print wirelessly: Login to the Web Upload page using your Kingston ID and password, and upload your file in one of the following formats:

supported formats

However, functionality is limited compared to the My Desktop Anywhere service: you can specify Mono (Black and White) or Colour printing, and number of copies, but that’s all. Multi-page documents will automatically be printed double-sided.

You can find step-by-step instructions for using the Web Upload page on the Service desk portal.

Method 3: Send your document to print@kingston.ac.uk

This last method is the quickest and simplest of the lot, but it’s also the most restrictive in terms of functionality. Login to your Kingston University email account and send the file you wish to print as an email attachment to the above address (the file must be in one of the formats listed above in method 2). When you receive a confirmation reply you can collect your document from any university MFD.

You’ll be unable to specify any finishing options. This means that if your document contains any colour elements, then it will automatically be printed in colour and you will be charged accordingly. Likewise, multi-page documents will automatically be printed double-sided.

So there we are: 3 quick ways to print your work, without using a university desktop computer. All of these methods can be used remotely, so you can send your work to print from the comfort of your own home, then come into campus and collect it from one of our MFDs later on that day. Simple!

How to produce posters using the Wide Format Printer

Many of you are giving poster presentations at the moment, and need to print your work in A1 size. This is much too large for our normal MFDs (which have a maximum paper size of A3). So if you want to make a big impact, and create a poster presentation that people will remember, you’ll need to use one of our special Wide Format Printers.

Wide Format Printing

There are machines at both PRD LRC and the Dame Elizabeth Esteve-Coll Centre (Knights Park). They work slightly differently to the normal LRC MFD – you’ll need to save your document in PDF file format before sending it to the Wide Format Printer. Don’t worry if you’re not sure how to do that – a member of LRC staff can help you out.

More details and pricing information are available here. Step-by-step instructions showing how to use the Wide Format Printer can be found in the Service desk portal.

My Desktop anywhereOur laptop loans service has been wildly popular. Now that we have laptops available for loan at all four LRCs, more students than ever are enjoying the benefits of using one of these devices. To make the most of the machines, we recommend that you log in to the My Desktop Anywhere service. Look for the cloud/computer icon on the desktop when you first boot-up the laptop.

By logging in using your K-number and password, you’ll get access to a “virtual” desktop, which looks and acts in exactly the same manner as that which you use on the desktop PCs. Not only will you have access to all the files saved on your H-Drive, you can also request specialist software (such as IBM SPSS, Adobe Photoshop, and Notepad++)  via the KU Service store, and print your documents just like you would if you were using a computer in the library.

My Desktop Anywhere can also be installed on your personal laptop. Speak to a member of LRC staff if you’d like further information.

Good news everyone! The cost of colour and wide-format printing has been reduced in response to student feedback.

From 9 January 2017, single-sided colour printing costs will be halved to 20p per A4 sheet, with A4 double-sided colour printing reduced to 34p. A3 single sided is halved to 30p and duplex reduced to 54p.

Wide-format printing has also been reduced, while black and white printing remains one of the lowest rates among British universities at just 4p per double-sided page.

The price reductions followed requests from students for cheaper colour printing and have been made possible by the appointment of a new printing contractor.

See all new print prices on the My Kingston Sustainable print page.
